In this thing, I added a couple of content tags to Lawrence Batley Theatre in the Guide to Huddersfield Wiki, free to edit with Wetpaint.

I think wikis are useful tools for sharing information, whether it be work or social common interests, where everyone can contribute and build and expand a database.
I went on to look at Muppet Wiki and found one of my favourite characters…Fozzie Bear…Here’s to the wiki celebration cry, if you like….Woka woka woka!
Wikis Worldwide June 6, 2010

I know we have a wiki for Computing and Library Services. An online encyclopedia of information. A quick way to access information about the service and update as that changes. I have looked at the wiki but not edited any information as yet… hopefully through this course I will learn how to do so in future.
The random articles that I came across were not bringing any articles of particular interest to me, but as a Beatles fan, I opted to search for the Beatles, presuming so much information would be on the wiki, as there is so much material about their music and lives published. I happened across a discussion about Bootleg Beatles’ material, what it means…and the discussion seemed quite passionate in regards to what the term bootleg means for different artists!http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beatles_bootleg_recordings

That is in the past, so onto current events… another hobby of mine, be it a seasonal one, is watching tennis, and in the lead up to Wimbledon, I was interested to see the French Open women’s results. I will have to keep an eye out for those names. Here’s the entry in Wikipedia:
In tennis, Francesca Schiavone (pictured) defeats Samantha Stosur in the French Open women’s singles final, becoming the first Italian woman to win the tournament. In tennis, Francesca Schiavone (pictured) defeats Samantha Stosur in the French Open women’s singles final, becoming the first Italian woman to win the tournament.
Technorati Time - Week 5 June 6, 2010

Just over half way through… and more technical things discovered on my journey…Technorati you may call it! I took a look at the various searches, and found some surprising finds…or not in some cases.
Huddersfield in blog posts was Number One in the top spot for QR codes at the University which I was very proud to see, but, alas, Huddersfield was nowhere to be seen in Tags, only such things as Heart disease, Hackers and a pleasant tag, Hope for the future…aww (not for hackers though one hopes!) and Huddersfield was not found in Directory either. This was unsurprising though, however, as Huddersfield is not a catgory, such as entertainment, even though it may well be within that category.
As I am catching up with this course, I felt I would take a look at a more up to date talent show than Strictly Come Dancing and took a look at a blog post for Britain’s got Talent. There were some interesting critiques of Miley Cyrus’ performances last night!
Tag it! June 6, 2010

I always thought tagging was something you did to name people in photos on Facebook…but I have learnt it’s so much more productive than that. I would have no use for it, at the moment in my work, using just a few websites regularly…but it must be a fantastic work, even social tool for others. To be able to share work with others, websites and web pages you have found useful. Del.icio.usis a fabulous (and palatable!) social bookmarking site, especially in the work of researchers, students, lecturers, even academic librarians. To be able share and tag websites you use, makes it easy to access by peers and colleagues, so that they can consider different websites on a particular topic (which has been tagged). For instance, a student researching an essay/dissertation , gaining these tips from fellow students and lecturers.
RSS Feeds…speedier news..’read all about it!’ June 5, 2010

After much time out of the game…I return to the heady world of 25 things! Well, with so much news to catch up on, 25 Things came in very handy with its recommendation of learning about RSS feeds! From what I have learnt, it is like a one stop shop, if you like, for keeping up to date with all your favourite site updates.I subscribed to sites such as Huddersfield Examiner, West Yorkshire Playhouse and something I always check…the weather. Using topix.net, I was excited that I discovered news and updates that I wouldn’t have surfed the web for, such as the kiss cam…Jason Bateman and Dustin Hoffmann…very bizarre what some find entertainingly hysterical?!…to the upsetting and tragic pictures that BP didn’t want the world to see of the terrible effects on wildlife their oil spillage has caused.
Technically…At first I registered my Bloglines account and then with Google Reader, which I preferred, a lot clearer layout of the account’s homepage, more user-friendly…or is that because I am more used to Google? Or maybe that’s why Google is so widely used…but that’s another discussion, isn’t it?…

Well…bit frustrated that I spent many hours yesterday…exploring flikr…after experiencing technical difficulties…so has hampered the fun of it somewhat! I have finally set up a flickr account and searching for photos today…found a stunning sunset as a backtrop to castle hill (never knew it was called Victioria’s Tower). I wanted to blog about it…but it wouldn’t accept the link…so will have to investigate further later..
…I have saved picture from Flikr and then attached it to this blog

Facebook is a great social networking tool. And it’s free. Networking with work colleagues and communicating about work too if you don’t have time to meet them too. Apart from the many ‘social’ aspects, games, photos and status updates, there is a chat option (like instant messaging). As the introduction YouTube video suggests, you can keep in touch with friends and old work colleagues who it would normally be hard to see in person. For example, I have friends that live all over the country and a couple that live elsewhere in the world, Greece and Puerto Rico! You can also share photos and links to shared points of interest and news. You can link up with friends of friends easily too, growing your social network. As a negative, with so many activities, games and alike, it can cause issues of time in the workplace. Privacy issues over the web can emerge too. If used correctly and in the right social context, it is a great social networking tool.
